Swedish Cardamom Buns Recipe

Swedish cardamom buns are sweet, savory, fluffy, and crunchy! Ideal for morning or afternoon coffee or tea. Easy and fun to make, twisty buns look impressive.

– 2 (12-ounce) cans evaporated milk – ½ cup granulated sugar – 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon salt – 2 tablespoons vegetable oil – ½ cup butter – 2 ⅓ teaspoons yeast – 8 ½ cups all purpose flour – 2 teaspoons ground cardamom – 1 egg – ¼ cup pearl sugar – 8 tablespoons butter, softened – 1 tablespoon ground cardamom – ½ cup granulated sugar

Warm the milk in the microwave or saucepan. Stir in sugar, vanilla, salt, vegetable oil, and butter to warm milk.

Mix well. Add yeast to milk. Knead the flour and ground cardamom into the wet mixture slowly.

Cover and let rise until doubled, or 1 hour. Make the filling by mixing all the ingredients in a bowl to a smooth paste.

Roll the dough into a large, ¼-inch thick sheet. Evenly cover the dough sheet with filling.

Overlap the dough sheet lengthwise. Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut the dough into 24 ½-inch wide strips.

One dough strip should be 5 inches long. Twist the dough strip to coil. On a parchment-lined baking sheet, coil the dough.

Tuck the strip end under the coil's bottom and slightly through the top. Repeat steps 11–14 with remaining strips, cover, and rise another hour.

Heat the oven to 425 F. Mix an egg and a teaspoon of water in a small bowl. Brush egg wash on rolls. Sprinkle pearl sugar on rolls.

Pre-heat the oven and bake for 15 minutes until golden brown. Hot coffee and buns for breakfast.
